  Responsibilities

  This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of WG. At the WG 1 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of WG 2. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
  
  These positions are within the Environmental Management Services (EMS) with the Veterans Health Administration at the William S. Middleton Memorial hospital in Madison, WI. As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning and disinfection duties. Duties include cleaning inpatient wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, nursing stations and other non-patient areas. Housekeeping Aids sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and tower dispensers and move furniture. Housekeeping Aids carry out assignments with minimal supervision.
  
  Work Schedule: 10:00 am- 6:30 pm Monday-Friday with weekends duties from 7:00 am-3:30 pm when on the rotating schedule Rotating schedule-off weekends 4 weeks and work weekends 4 weeks, alternating holidays

  PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.
  
  WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.
  
  IMPORTANT NOTICE: By law, Housekeeping Aid positions may only be filled with applicants eligible for Veterans' Preference when announced to US Citizens.   Qualifications

  Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.
