This National Guard position is for a DIGITAL PRODUCTION SYSTEM TECHNICIAN, Position Description Number D1598000and is part of the IL DCSIM, National Guard.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

Duties


As a DIGITAL PRODUCTION SYSTEM TECHNICIAN, GS-0303-5/6/7, you will review print requests to determine delivery date, type paper stock, color, and image position. Ensure material required is available, or on order. Prioritize print orders to meet deadlines. Ensure efficient and effective use of equipment. Operate a computer workstation to receive and convert job order data into formats suitable for production runs on an electronic duplicating system. Utilize network software, compact discs or download job orders from the internet military web sites or local servers to capture information originated with a wide variety of work processing, graphics, and desktop publishing software packages. Store images in system until ready for printing or repetitive print orders on tape for future retrieval and use. Selects system features and options required to complete the job according to specifications. Set up appropriate controls for various enhancement features, e.g., screens. Set up job specifications (i.e. stitching, single side, two sided, etc.) of documents according to customers print request. Scan hard copies and determine page sequencing and special set-up requirements to select duplicating system settings and appropriate equipment for the job, i.e. single stitch dual stitch, tape binding multi-up, or signature booklet maker. Modify electronic media as necessary to ensure the best product possible. Program job specification into system and makes necessary adjustments based on quality of originals. Inspect sample output copies for quality, sequence and adherence to specifications of completed project. Complete production run as specified on print request and forwards to bindery for finishing. Utilize comprehensive knowledge of printing equipment and operations to resolve problems, answer questions, and assist in on-the-job (OJT) training of production personnel. Review all print requests to determine and select appropriate equipment for the job. Maintain adequate supply of production materials, notifying appropriate personnel when procurement of additional materials is required. Serve as a senior non-supervisory production worker for the electronic duplicating system. Provide printing instructions and/or written procedures to other production workers. Assign tasks to be performed by individual operators. Work with other operators, setting the pace and demonstrating proper work methods. Assure plans, materials and tools are available and supplies are obtained. Ensure authorized personnel operate the system and users have been adequately trained to prevent injury to personnel or damage to equipment. Obtain needed information or decisions from Support Services Supervisor on problems that come up during the workday. Answer questions of operators on procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives. Check work while in progress and checks with operators to ensure instructions on work sequence procedures, methods and deadlines have been met. Report to supervisor on status and progress of work and causes of work delays. Ensure safety and housekeeping rules are followed. Enforce OSHA and operating safety standards, especially use of safety equipment. Perform monthly inspection of fire extinguishers. Maintain equipment in peak operating condition by managing system resources. Perform daily and weekly maintenance functions in accordance with operating manuals and established procedures, e.g., cleans document glass, screen, and binder; replaces consumable supplies. Repair/correct routine mechanical problems and perform preventive maintenance service. Place calls and work with technical service representatives to report problems, seek solutions, and for repairs beyond area of expertise. Utilize extensive knowledge of technical/service manuals and diagnostic tools to locate and correct system problems with equipment. Place call to manufacturer representative or notify supervisor to report problems/seek solutions; respond to manufacturer prompts to resolve problem. Order, track, and maintain inventory on all needed print shop supplies. Ensure all print shop equipment is operational. Monitor and track payment of service calls. Track all impressions and cost associated with the print shop for required NGB print reports. Manages system resources, i.e. deleting or storing jobs, deleting files or folders no longer needed. Maintains the electronic file library. Responsible for the security of the system. Creates and maintains customer and user accounts. Provide printing instructions to other production works, assigns tasks, and answers questions and reviews work of lower graded employees.?
