POSITION INFORMATION:  This recruitment will be used to fill seasonal appointments. These appointments are not to exceed 1039 hours in a twelve month period, although positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. 
WORK SCHEDULE:  This is a full-time position and is required to work holidays, evenings, and weekends.  

Duties

The successful applicant will perform a variety of operation and maintenance duties at Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a unit of the National Park Service, whose mission is to preserve and protect 1300-year-old ancestral Puebloan ruins for the public.  These include simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.
These duties include:
- Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.
Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
- Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches and catches.
- Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
- Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles.
- Receives, unloads and processes incoming shipments according to established procedures. Reports discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items.
- Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. Collects trash.
- Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
- Cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Makes minor repairs as needed and refers problems to higher graded workers.
- Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Chaco Culture NHP is located in a semi-arid desert steppe environment in the southeast corner of the Colorado Plateau. The park ranges from 6,000 to 6,800 feet in elevation and encompasses three prominent land forms: (1) the alluvium-filled valley floor of Chaco Canyon, with prominent drainage features; (2) expansive cretaceous sandstone mesas, topped by slickrock outcrops and gently rolling hills; and, (3) small side canyons (locally known as "rincons") eroded into the sandstone faces adjacent to the main canyon floor. Chaco Canyon receives 6.5 to 9 inches of precipitation annually.  Chaco Culture National Historical Park is very remote, accessed by 13 miles of unpaved road. Cell phone service is not available and internet access is limited. Weather extremes can be significant, including daytime summer temperatures that can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  Groceries are available in Bloomfield, Farmington and Aztec, NM located 60 to 70 miles from the park.  Government housing may be available.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Monday, May 15, 2017. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.
QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.
WG-5: Applicants must be physically fit and must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Examples of  experience for this position include:  Specialized experience that demonstrates the knowledge of technical practices, tools, and equipment related to assisting journey-level, or other higher grade maintenance workers under general supervision, to include basic carpentry, simple electrical installations or repairs, basic plumbing work, painting interior and exterior surfaces, and janitorial services. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You must meet level 2 on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements in the occupational assessment questionnaire.

 
Requirements
1. If new to Federal Civil Service, you will be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.
2. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
3.  Applicants must possess a valid state drivers license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid state drivers license is required.
