This is a temporary Pathways Internship Program appointment not-to-exceed September 30, 2017 and may be extended based on program needs and if the student meets program requirements. The work hours are full-time, but flexible and may include days, nights and weekends.
The incumbent of this position serves as a student trainee in an Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Animal Care program. They will work on-site at the Smithsonian National Zoo alongside a Curator or a Biologist in one of the following six animal unit houses: Reptile, Asia Trails (Bears), Small Mammals, Primates, Lions/Tigers, and/or Cheetahs/Elephants/Zebras.

This position is located in Washington, DC.

Applicants must be available to work a regular schedule when classes are in session as well as during scheduled breaks.

The Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed.

This appointment confers no promotion potential beyond the grade level at which the intern was selected.

Duties

At the GS-04 grade level, the duties may include, but are not limited to:

• The student trainee receives varied assignments designed to provide on-the-job training and experience in activities conducted by Animal Care.  This work experience will provide an understanding of the organization’s functions and responsibilities, as well as an opportunity to apply knowledge gained as a student to the activities being conducted by Animal Care in ensuring the humane care of animals in regulated facilities.
  
• The student performs animal technician work with a highly technical Biologist or Curator whose duties consist of performing inspections to determine the physical and psychological well-being of animals covered by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).  Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:  observing and/or performing routine inspections on reptiles and exotic mammals including lions, tigers, bears, elephants and primates that are owned by or are in the custody of the National Zoo to assure compliance with the provisions of the AWA.

Qualifications

ELIGIBILITY: Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.

IN ADDITION to meeting eligibility requirements, you MUST meet the below qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below.
EDUCATION:
GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) of post-high school study or an associate's degree; preferred fields: Animal Science, Food Safety, Infectious Diseases, Clinical Sciences, Epidemiology, Pathology, Laboratory Animal Sciences, Public Health, Wildlife, Zoological, Biological Science, Biology and Genetics.

All academic degrees or course work must be completed in an educational institution that has obtained accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  For a list of schools that meet this criteria, see http://www.ed.gov/.

Special Conditions

• If selected, official transcripts will be required prior to entrance on duty.  Proof of enrollment or acceptance for the upcoming academic term or semester will also be required unless graduating in the current semester.
• Transcripts (official or unofficial) and proof of current enrollment must be included with our application.  See the "Required Documents" section for more information.
• A Pathways Participant Agreement will be required if you are selected for a position. The agreement must be signed by all applicable parties prior to entrance on duty.
• Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully completed adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation.
• Schedule will be determined when student is selected: Hours of work will vary and may include days, nights, and weekends.
• The work is principally sedentary though there may be some walking or bending involved.  The work is performed while sitting for long periods of time while using a computer.  Occasional field work requires walking, bending, crouching and climbing for prolonged periods in rough terrain subject to a variety of weather conditions.  
• The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions. Incumbent may be subject to regular and recurring risks associated with working around animals.  The work may require wearing personal protective equipment when working alongside inspectors at facilities.  Additionally, there is a requirement for diagnostic tests and vaccinations in order to gain access to some of the facilities to be inspected.
