Duties

As a Visitor Safety Attendant, you will travel the Chilkoot Trail by foot and boat, providing visitor safety services through prevention, education and response, including visitor-risk management activities and search and rescue as a first responder. You will supports and deliver cultural and natural resource management and protection through awareness, prevention and education.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill one term position for four (4) months.

This selection process may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various linguistic profiles and security requirements, conditions of employment as well as various tenures (such as Indeterminate, Specified Period, Acting, Deployment, Assignment and Secondment)

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:
• A secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training, experience and/or knowledge relevant to the position.
Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCE:

• Experience traveling in the wilderness, under adverse conditions, using a variety of backcountry equipment

• Experience operating a variety of mechanical and technical equipment such as GPS, motor boats, and hand tools.

• Experience living or working in a small group in a wilderness environment for up to a week at a time

• Experience in cultural or natural resource management

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

• Completion a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences
Degree equivalency

• Knowledge of the purpose and role of National Parks and National Historic Sites

• Knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site

• Ability to work in both a team setting and independently

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation

• Work shift-work and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial holidays

• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the Parks Canada uniform policy and prescribed protective equipment

• Requirement to use appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing at all times in the performance of duties

• Has physical capacity and endurance required for performing daily tasks, sometimes under adverse conditions (e.g., long hikes and lifting loads)

• Requirement to live and work in a field camp environment

• Willingness to obtain the Canada Safety Firearms Course

• Ability to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operators Card

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks

• Valid Advanced Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Aid Responder Certification

• Valid Avalanche Training (AST 1) and experience travelling in avalanche terrain

• Possession of valid Class 5 Drivers License
