Use your extensive medical terminology knowledge, analytical and communication skills in this opportunity with the Thunder Bay Production and Verification Services Branch as a Medical Coder.
• Code and verify death and stillbirth registrations determining the underlying cause of death/stillbirth using the International Classification of Disease Manual (ICD).
• Interpret causes not in conformity with the ICD by referring to the medical dictionary and Decision Tables.
• Correspond with physicians, coroners, hospitals and other organizations/individuals to obtain or clarify information.
• Batch and match incomplete death/stillbirth documents.
• Update various manuals and indexes.
• You have the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation (e.g. Vital Statistics Act and the Marriage Act).
• You have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.
• You have demonstrated tact and diplomacy when dealing with internal and external clients.
• You have well developed customer service and conflict resolution skills.
• You have demonstrated decision making and problem solving skills to investigate and compile information to make decisions (e.g. resolving discrepancies in cause of death codes).
• You have knowledge of and experience with various software applications (Database, Word, Excel, and electronic mail) to perform administrative duties.

How do I qualify?
Technical Knowledge
• You have extensive knowledge of medical terminology and experience coding using the International Classification of Diseases and other related resources (e.g. medical directory and medical dictionary).• You have the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation (e.g. Vital Statistics Act and the Marriage Act).
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• You have well developed oral and written communication skills to prepare correspondence and liaise with physicians, coroners, hospitals and other individuals to obtain information.• You have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.
• You have demonstrated tact and diplomacy when dealing with internal and external clients.
• You have well developed customer service and conflict resolution skills.
Analytical and Problem Solving Skills
• You have proven analytical skills to examine documents for completeness/accuracy, and determine the acceptability of documents/evidence.• You have demonstrated decision making and problem solving skills to investigate and compile information to make decisions (e.g. resolving discrepancies in cause of death codes).
Administrative Skills
