This week (November 13-19) is U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week!

U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (formerly known “Get Smart About Antibiotics Week”) is an annual observance held to raise awareness about antibiotic resistance and the importance of prescribing and using antibiotics appropriately.

This week's observance is a critical part of the Center for Disease Control & Prevention's (CDC) efforts to improve antibiotic stewardship in communities, in healthcare facilities, and on the farm in collaboration with state-based programs, nonprofit partners, and for-profit partners. 

You can join CDC and their partners in efforts to combat the spread of antibiotic resistance and improve patient safety by using the following resources:

• A stakeholder toolkit, which includes key messaging, a press release template, social media posts, and more, can be accessed here.
• A list of events and activities ideas to be used to to promote this year's observance can be found here.
• Additional educational materials related to antibiotic prescribing, use, and resistance are available for multiple audiences here.

According to the CDC, at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics annually in the U.S. More than 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections, and many others die from other conditions made more complex as a result of antibiotic-resistant infections.
