These Dispatcher (Public Safety) positions are located in Gateway National Recreation Area - Visitor and Resource Protection Division's Dispatch Center.
These positions are Full-Time temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year with potential to be extended for an additional one year for a maximum of two years based on agency needs and potential funding.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee. Learn more about this agency
Responsibilities
The incumbents of these Dispatcher (Public Safety) positions receive and process emergency and non-emergency requests for service and information by telephone, two-way emergency communications radio system or walk-ins. The incumbent obtains the essential facts and dispatches the appropriate response units (such as law enforcement, search and rescue, and fire), maintains documentation and makes notifications. Based on information obtained, the incumbent prioritizes the emergency personnel response that is dispatched.
Incumbent of these Dispatcher Public Safety positions are responsible for operating multi-frequency radio consoles, monitoring multi-agency radio system, and conducting queries / searches in emergency / law enforcement automated information systems in order to perform criminal history checks, access wanted files, motor vehicle department files, or stolen, lost or wanted items/subjects. Responsible for safeguarding confidential and law enforcement sensitive information, processing law enforcement requests and paperwork, and maintaining detailed computerized logs.
Appointment subject to the favoably adjudicated background investigation.
Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
These are Drug Testing Designated Positions.
Incumbent will be required to wear the National Park Service Uniform.
Position will be subject to Shift Rotation.
Incumbent should expect to work night, weekend, and Holiday shifts.
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
These Dispatcher (Public Safety), GS-2151-06 positions have been designated a Non-Critical Sensitive position. The selected candidate must be cleared through a favorably adjudicated Law Enforcement Special Agency Check (SAC) and have their Tier 3 background investigation release to the U.S Office of Personnel Management in advance of being able to enter-on-duty (EOD) in to one of these Dispatcher (Public Safety) position.
You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To be qualified for this Dispatcher (Public Safety) position at the GS-06 grade level based on your work experience, you must possess at least one year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower graded level of this GS-06 position (to be creditable, this specialized experience must have been at a level comparable to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal government).
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized (qualifying) experience for this Dispatcher (Public Safety) position at the GS-06 grade level include: relaying information on a radio or telephone system; performing dispatch and call taking services for public safety incidents and operations; performing coordination function for law enforcement, fire, and / or emergency services response to public safety incidents; initiating appropriate response of personnel and apparatus in accordance with established guidance, plans, and protocols; providing critical information and logistical support to responders; accessing criminal records and information through dedicated software and computer systems and disseminating that information in an accurate and timely fashion to responding personnel.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
