• Summary

  This is an Excepted Service position.
  
  This position is part of the WHS Facilities Services Directorate. As a Student Trainee (Fire Protection), this position is located in:
  
  Department of Defense (DoD), Washington Headquarters Services (WHS); Facilities Services Directorate; Assistant Director, Mission Support; Standards and Compliance Division; Office of the Pentagon Fire Marshal. The role of the Office of the Pentagon Fire Marshal is to assure the safety of all occupants from fire and related events; protect and preserve property from the ravages of fire; minimize disruption and maintain continuity of operations should an uncontrolled fire occur. Fire Marshal responsibilities include: fire prevention programs; emergency planning/response support; coordination/interface with other Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ); fire prevention, life safety, fire evacuation and fire fighting education/training; fire reporting and investigation; fire inspections; occupant inspection programs; fire protection systems inspection, testing and maintenance audits; fire protection documentation, public relations; engineering design review; maintenance of codes and standards; special events reviews; issuance of fire permits; evacuation routing & maps and assembly area coordination. The incumbent performs professional engineering work that protects life and property at the Pentagon. The work includes assessing and predicting fire hazards/risks; mitigating fire damage through proper design, construction, and arrangement of facilities; inspecting and testing fire detection and suppression apparatus, devices, and systems; and assessing fire protection requirements.

  Responsibilities

  As a Student Trainee (Fire Protection), GS-0899-7/9/11/12, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
  

  • Performing detailed review of designs and shop drawings.
  • Performing acceptance testing of building and fire protection systems being constructed.
  • Reviewing studies, scopes of work, and preliminary/final design plans and specifications.
  • Providing detailed design analysis reports.
  • Evaluating work for compliance with federal accessibility, building, and fire codes.
  • Visiting sites of proposed future construction projects.

  In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for the position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
  
  You may qualify at the GS-7 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
  
  A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to provide input on criteria on fire prevention and fire protection guide specifications; provide input on matters pertaining to fire prevention, fire protection, and life safety engineering; review scopes of work, project criteria, time tables/scheduling; provide input to generate cost comparison and other calculations for fire prevention, fire protection and life safety engineering design work. OR
  
  B. One year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement in a field similar to the position in which I am applying. OR
  
  C. A combination of experience and education as described in A and B above.
  
  
  You may qualify at the GS-09 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
  
  A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to review the work created by architect engineering firms to include review of preliminary reports, design analysis, calculations, and design drawings/specifications related to construction projects; provide input on criteria on fire prevention and fire protection guide specifications; provide input on matters pertaining to fire prevention, fire protection, and life safety engineering; review scopes of work, project criteria, time tables/scheduling; provide input to generate cost comparison and other calculations for fire prevention, fire protection and life safety engineering design work. OR
  
  B. 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field similar to the position in which I am applying. OR
  
  C. A combination of experience and education as described in A and B above.
  
  You may qualify at the GS-11 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
  
  A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to review and/or evaluate the work created by architect engineering firms to include review of preliminary reports, design analysis, calculations, and design drawings/specifications related to construction projects; develop, revise, and/or provide criteria on fire prevention and fire protection guide specifications; provide input on matters pertaining to fire prevention, fire protection, and life safety engineering; review scopes of work, project criteria, time tables/scheduling; provide input to generate cost comparison and other calculations for fire prevention, fire protection and life safety engineering design work. OR
  
  B. 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field similar to the position in which I am applying.
  
  You may qualify at the GS-12 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
  
  One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to review and evaluate the work created by architect engineering firms to include review of preliminary reports, design analysis, calculations, and design drawings/specifications related to construction projects; develop, revise, and provide criteria on fire prevention and fire protection guide specifications; serve as an advisor on matters pertaining to fire prevention, fire protection, and life safety engineering; apply technical knowledge while reviewing scopes of work, project criteria, time tables/scheduling; generate cost comparison and other calculations for fire prevention, fire protection and life safety engineering design work.
  
  Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
