Duties


These permanent full-time and part-time positions, with benefits, are located at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas, in the Environmental Management Service Line.
The incumbents will perform a variety of tasks to keep the facility in a clean and sanitary condition, using various types of cleaning materials and techniques (including cleaning chemicals and heavy, industrial-type powered equipment). This will include performing sanitation duties in patient rooms and in critical/specialized areas of the facility, such as operating rooms, cardiac care units, intensive care units, and dialysis areas. Major duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Cleaning/washing beds, equipment, furnishings, walls, fixtures, etc.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of floors, carpeted surfaces, and upholstered furniture
  • Cleaning restrooms
  • Dusting
  • Removing and properly disposing of waste (trash, sharps containers, etc.)
  • Utilizing an Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) machine to disinfect patient rooms
  • Making beds in discharged rooms after discharge cleaning
  • Practicing appropriate isolation techniques to prevent contamination/cross-contamination
  • Cleaning assigned housekeeping closet and equipment
  • Properly selecting, using, and maintaining chemicals, tools, powered equipment, and protective attire
  • Replenishing supplies and sanitizing various dispensers
  • Reporting safety issues and maintenance needs to supervisor
Work Schedule: To be determined, but must be available to work all days and times, since shift rotation (including weekend work) may be required. No alternate work schedule available.
