The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to (2) temporary positions at Everglades National Park, Florida. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Anticipated Entry on Duty: November/2017.
The Gulf Coast district is located on the northwestern side of the park, and includes much of the Ten Thousand Islands. The visitor center is in Everglades City; a small town 35 miles southeast of Naples. The town has several restaurants, a small grocery store, a couple of gas stations, and an outlet of the county library. Surrounded by water, Everglades City is a great place for boating and fishing. The waters and islands are home to dolphins, manatees, and shore birds and offer outstanding wilderness experiences.
There is no public transit available either to the park or inside park boundaries or to Everglades City. Winter temperatures are mild averaging 75 to 85 degrees. Evening temperatures can be in the 60s and 70s. Winter is the dry season. Summer temperatures are hot averaging between 90 and 94 degrees. Evening temperatures can dip down into the 70s. Summer is the wet season; rain with thunderstorms is very common. Hot humid weather makes the area perfect habitat for biting and stinging insects. Mosquitoes and sand flies can be intense no matter the time of year.
This announcement is being advertised under delegated examining procedures and is open to all U.S. citizens.
This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Duties
Independently operates visitor center to provide visitor information and orientation. Operates a cash register and credit card machine, sells/issues park passes and federal recreation passports, issues backcountry camping permits, and conducts sales for the cooperating association. Completes shift reports to verify monies collected, accountable stock sold, and all machine transactions. Trains others on the fee collection operation. Maintains the backcountry camping permit system, including log book, worksheets, and statistics. Insures that permit fees are calculated accurately, log book entries are accurate, and permits are issued correctly. Explains rules, regulations, and Leave No Trace principles to backcountry users/campers. Coordinates with other NPS offices, concessionaires, and essential cooperators. Provides interpretive and informational support services such as cleaning and maintaining equipment, providing informal interpretation, maintaining bulletin boards, clerical work, and keeping statistical records.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is often performed in a small, fast paced, indoor setting and requires standing for a long period of time at a visitor center desk. High levels of noises coming from the park movie and ringing from the visitor center phone may exist along with heavy visitation periods.
