Duties

These positions are located in Environmental Management Service (EMS) within the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center, Kerrville, Texas. As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties. Duties include cleaning wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas. Housekeeping Aids sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and tower dispensers and move furniture. Housekeeping Aids carry out assignments with minimal supervision.

Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Sweeping and mopping floors, dust mop, damp mop, in-depth cleaning of floor surfaces hallways and stairwells;
• Stripping, scrubbing/refinishing and buff tiled floors; shampoo, vacuum and clean carpets;
• Spot shampooing, and/or bonnet carpet;
• Maintaining refinished floors using correct solutions and EMS guidelines;
• Cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing all patient and public restrooms to include urinals, toilets, stalls, sinks, bathtubs, shower stalls, mirrors all restroom fixtures, spot clean walls and perform floor care as required;
• Performing high/low dusting, clean exterior surface of light fixtures, vents, medical instrument panels, night stands, and bedside tables, patient/visitor's side chair, overhead light fixtures and other auxiliary items;
• Washing walls, blinds, woodwork and windows from the inside;
• Polishing metal fixtures, clean glass doors and other glass surfaces;
• Replenishing paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, etc.) soap, hand sanitizers, or other supplies utilized where dispensers are located;
• Moving and arranging furniture, beds, etc. in the assigned areas to accomplish cleaning tasks;
• Emptying trash and waste baskets, replacing trash receptacle liners;
• Cleaning of patient-discharge, inter-unit transfer, and/or long term care patient units (CLC, SCIC, PolyTrauma, etc.);
• Provides bed-making service in patient care areas;
• Washing (with a germicidal/detergent solution) the mattresses, and bed frames following acceptable cleaning methods;
• Setting up conference rooms for meetings as necessary; and
• Policing outside area of building as required by EMS protocols.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Physical Demands & Working Conditions: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.

Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: By law, Housekeeping Aid positions may only be filled with applicants eligible for Veterans' Preference when announced to US Citizens.
