Duties

The incumbent serves in the Gallery Shops department of the National Gallery of Art. The incumbent is responsible for receiving merchandise from vendors, checking its condition, receiving it into the inventory, storing it, and shipping it to the sales shops at the Gallery.

1. Receives merchandise at the loading dock. Carefully inspects incoming shipments for damage.
2. Opens and counts merchandise, checking for damage or defects.
3. Stocks merchandise on shelves, pallets and pallet racks according to an established pattern.
4. Pulls merchandise for distribution to shops. Pulls and loads merchandise onto pallets when large quantities leave the Warehouse.
5. Counts and records quantities of merchandise returned from the shops on accompanying transfer documents.
6. Performs stock counts on regular basis in order to keep inventory as accurate as possible.
7. Uses and operates properly various pieces of equipment such as electric forklift, pallet jack, conveyor belt, dollies and carts.
8. Maintains a legal state drivers license and when needed drives the AGS truck to and from the Gallery and occasionally to other locations as needed for special deliveries and/or pick ups.
9. When needed, works in the fulfillment/shipping room to process Web and Send Sale orders for shipment via carrier.
10. Follows all safety procedures of the Gallery including wearing all necessary safety equipment provided by the Gallery.
11. Carries out other tasks assigned by the Lead Materials Handler or Operations Supervisor.

Qualifications

In order to be qualified, applicants must possess at least one year of the appropriate level of specialized experience. Specialized experience is demonstrated experience with retail merchandising, buying and product development including decision making responsibility for your assigned categories. Such experience must also demonstrate problem solving, developing logistical solutions to improve the efficiency of operations, and increasing profitability of an organization in excess of $8 million.

Candidates must reflect in their submitted USAJOBS résumés the possession of this specialized experience. If their résumé does not include such specialized experience, they will be ineligible for this position.

Those applicants who meet the listed specialized experience requirement will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates. Applicants must describe their possession of each of these factors individually in a one to two page cover letter as a part of their application package.

1. Thorough knowledge of retail inventory control and purchasing processes.
2. Working knowledge of merchandising math.
3. Working knowledge of accepted retail practices including vendor pricing, discounting and shipping options.
4. Experience working in retail environment with emphasis in the areas of merchandising, purchasing and/or inventory control.
5. Working knowledge of retail inventory control systems (e.g. Teamwork), Microsoft and Excel experience preferred.
6. Basic knowledge of Art History and/or experience working in a museum or other non-profit retail setting.
7. Excellent communication and problem solving skills with strong attention to detail.
8. Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.

The incumbent must be able to lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds, and must be able to push carts loaded with up to 500 pounds of merchandise. The incumbent is required to walk, bend, climb stairs, and operate forklifts and conveyor belts. The incumbent will be on their feet a majority of the time.
