Job Description

Reporting to the Project Manager, Public Engagement, the Public Outreach Trainee will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of the 2018 Election Public Engagement Strategy; including supporting partnerships and stakeholder relations, tracking and evaluation, and public education and outreach.

Responsibilities:

Primary functions associated with this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Assists with the planning and preparation of presentations to residents, internal staff and external stakeholders to support the dissemination of information about the 2018 Municipal Election.
  • Assists with the planning and preparation at various community events/ fairs to provide information about the 2018 Municipal Election to the varying audiences in attendance.
  • Creates and maintains data sets, including filing, data entry, and report writing.
  • Prepares and loads election outreach supplies and equipment, such as paper products, cardboard, equipment, boxes, and furniture.
  • Operates election voting equipment.
  • Performs clerical duties such as customer service, photocopying/faxing, organizing, and collating.
Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
  1. University or College Degree in Public Relations, Event Planning, Marketing and Communication, Public Engagement or the approved equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  2. Experience in a customer service and/or events environment, effectively dealing with the general public and staff, responding to inquiries both in person and on the telephone.
  3. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint).
You must also have: 
  • Excellent oral communication and presentation skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and the public in an efficient and diplomatic manner.
  • Knowledge of matters related to equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Highly-developed interpersonal, problem-solving, and customer service skills and the proven ability to deal with challenging situations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, including attention to detail, ability to set priorities, ability to meet deadlines, and ability to deal with conflicting priorities at work.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to handle information of a confidential/sensitive nature.
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours in peak periods, including evenings and weekends.
  • Access to a vehicle is an asset or being comfortable with taking public transit for off-site events and meetings.
