The BC Prosecution Service contributes to the protection of society by preparing for and conducting prosecutions diligently and fairly, and by striving to develop the most effective methods to administer justice in the Province.  The BCPS prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Young Offenders Act, and provincial statutes in the provincial, Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada. The BCPS provides legal advice to government and police on criminal law matters and develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the prosecution of criminal offences. In addition to providng a variety of legal support services for Crown Counsel you are also an integral point of contact for the public, police, and other BCPS partners. You provide redaction services (at the advanced level) for the purpose of disclosure to Defence Counsel.

As a Legal Assistant, you are responsible for providing witness management and financial functions. The Legal Assistant receives administrative supervision from the Legal Officer Manager or District Administrator and reports to Crown Counsel for daily assignments and direction. Your ability to deal with issues of a sensitive and confidential nature with tact, diplomacy, discretion and good judgement will prepare you to work effectively in a demanding environment where some of the most challenging criminal and appellate cases are managed. You are well versed in legal terminology, an accurate and efficient recorder and researcher and adept at handling inquiries from a variety of persons, including those that are possibly irate or resistant. Working with limited direction, you exhibit exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.

Qualifications:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:
 

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent, and successful completion of a recognized legal assistant or paralegal program; OR a combination of 4 years of education, training and administrative support/clerical experience in a legal office.
  • One year of recent experience (within the last two years) working in a legal office as a legal assistant or paralegal OR any recent experience (within the last two years) working as a legal assistant or paralegal with the BC Prosecution Service.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class 5 BC Drivers License. Some travel may be required.

Preference may be given to applicants who have one or more of the following areas:
  • Completion of a legal assistant certificate or paralegal certificate
  • More than one year of recent expereince (within the last two years) working in a legal office as a legal assistant or paralegal.
  • Experience working as a legal assistant in the criminal law field and/or the Justice Sector
A Criminal Record Review Act Check (CRRA) and Enhanced Security Screening will be required.
