Boat Captain, Departmental Attendant/Driver (St. Ann, Jamaica) - UWI, Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory

The University of the West Indies, Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory is seeking a suitably qualified professional to join our team in the capacity of:

Boat Captain

The successful candidate will report to the Director, Centre of Marine Sciences and is expected to perform the following duties:

• Responsible for the safe operation of UWI-DBML boats for teaching, research and outreach, etc.
• Responsible for the adherence to the safety procedures as it relates to the operations of the boats
• Responsible for keeping track of necessary fuel and lubricants used for operation of the boats
• Responsible for keeping track of basic boat spares and materials needed to keep boat clean
• Facilitation of minor boat repairs and servicing as necessary
• Responsible for regular hull cleaning of all boats to ensure that the build up of fouling organisms does not occur
• Responsible for the suitable mooring of all UWI-DBML vessels while in dock, especially during any rough weather
• Assist with specimen collection as necessary
• Assist the Diving Officer in the maintenance/installation of dive moorings and various maintenance activities around the Facility

Qualifications, experience and requirements:

•   Currently licensed as a Coxswain with a minimum rating of Class III
• Certified in Emergency First Response (CPR/First Aid) or ability to be trained
• Must be able to swim
• be able to lift and carry 50 lbs
• Be able to work long hours at sea
• At least three (3) years of experience working in a similar position
• Must have a minimum of three (3) CXC subjects or equivalent

Departmental Attendant/Driver

The successful candidate will report to the Director, Centre for Marine Sciences and is expected to perform the following duties:

• Provide assistance in the areas of carpentry, painting, plumbing and mason work
• Assist with the organization pf storerooms
• Act as Bearer for the DBML in the delivery services and collection of purchases
• Transport members of staff and visitors
• Monitor and refuel vehicles, boats and standby generator
• Assist with the maintenance of inventory log for vehicles, boats and equipment
• Clean and organize the Wet Laboratory

Qualifications, experience and requirements

• Must possess a valid driver's license that allows the driving of pickups laden weight 3000 kg and above
• At least five (5) years driving experience
• Ability to exercise discretion with highly sensitive and confidential information
• Police record issued within the last 12 months would be advantageous
• Be willing to work outside of normal working hours
