Senior Legal Officer - Criminal and Civil (Level 8)

Jamaica Customs Agency (An Executive Agency) invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Senior Legal Officer - Criminal and Civil (Level 8) in the Legal affairs Unit.

Job Purpose

The incumbent will be responsible for leading the preparation of cases for Court in relation to matters in which the Agency has an interest and institute legal proceedings in respect of breaches of the Customs Act and other related legislation. He/she will also prepare cases for deliberation by the appropriate body (such as the Attorney General's Chambers and the Revenue Appeals Division); and, do research and advise the Agency on matters relating to Customs Laws and other legal issues.

Core Functions

• Leads team in the preparation of cases before the relevant adjudicating tribunals in relation to matters in which the Agency has interest.
• Institutes legal proceeding for breaches of the Customs Act and Regulations.
• Prepares cases for deliberation to the appropriate adjudicating body.
• Researches and advises the Agency on matter relating to Customs laws and other legal matters.

Requirement Skills/Competencies

• Excellent communication, negotiating and persuasion skills
• High integrity and ethics, with strong judgment, problem solving and analytical skills.
• Sound knowledge of business laws, commercial practice and procedure and relevant computer systems and applications.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor of Law Degree
• Certificate of Legal Education
• Seven (7) years' experience as an Attorney at Law, of which at least five (5) years' experience in litigation.

Compensation Package

Salary within the range: $3,568,279 - $4,281,935 per annum and the applicable allowance(s) attached to the post.
