Responsibilities
NOTE: This is a part-time position (16 hours/week). Benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.
These positions are located within the VA Central Iowa Health Care System, Des Moines, IA . As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties. Duties include cleaning wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas. Housekeeping Aids sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and tower dispensers and move furniture. Housekeeping Aids carry out assignments with minimal supervision.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of janitorial and custodial work that requires substantial physical effort to operate and adjust heavy duty cleaning equipment, climb ladders, as well as simple repetitive actions such as scrubbing and mopping. The physical demands of the position require some heavy lifting (equipment and materials), movement of furniture, and requires the stamina to perform physical labor. Continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting and arduous physical effort is required in the performance of the manual tasks described; such as washing walls above five feet and operating vacuum cleaners, mops, and powered equipment over extended periods of time. Must be able to push carts full of trash and laundry (1100 lbs- maybe required to use a Power Tug) and be able to lift and carry items weighting up to 20 pounds frequently and items weighing between 40 and 50 pounds on occasion. Moving, set up and working from ladders is also infrequently required.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee usually works indoors, in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. The employee works with chemicals which require appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves and goggles. The employee is exposed to cleaning and laundry chemicals. The employee may be exposed to occasional noise, skin irritations, cuts and bruises as well as vibration from heavy equipment and must be careful to avoid injury while using equipment and tools. The employee must be constantly aware of safety requirements and infection control practices. Through protective facilities and devices, to include but not limited to gloves, respirators, gowns, and masks, VA central Iowa has practically eliminated risk of severe hazards, physical hardships, and working conditions of a server nature. The employee must exhibit professionalism and courtesy in dealing with fellow employees at all levels as well as visitors and volunteers.

Qualifications
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.
