This position is located in the sample preparation and analytical laboratories in the Department of Mineral Sciences (DMS) in the National Museum of Natural History. The primary purpose of the position is to provide specialized preparation of geological specimens and to assist in the maintenance and operation of the analytical laboratories.
Duties
Operates and maintains shop equipment including a drill press, grinder and welder and a variety of powered and non-powered hand tools.
Performs a wide range of highly-skilled lapidary and geologic sample preparation work in support of geologic studies.
Operates and maintains a variety of cutting, grinding and polishing equipment for lapidary applications.
Assists in the maintenance and operation of optical microscopes and analytical equipment.

Qualifications
Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of full-time experience at the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system that is close or similar to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects.For this position specialized experience is defined aspreparing geologic sample work; operating a variety of geologic machines (e.g. radial diamond saws, thin section grinders, pressure heads, polishing consoles); and using electron microbeam instruments as they are applied to research.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
Or Education: One full year of graduate level education related to the position orSuperior Academic Achievement may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement.
