Duties
This position is located in the Sterile Processing Department at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY and is responsible for ensuring that all surgical supplies, instruments and equipment are properly decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, and sterilized in a timely and efficient manner to support services that perform surgical and minor procedures. Major duties include but are not limited to the following:
* Sorts and disassembles instruments and independently determines appropriate method and/or device for decontamination;
* Follows established policies and manufacturer instructions for reprocessing reusable medical equipment;
* Inspects instruments for cleanliness, damage, and utilizes recommended procedures for testing the functionality of instruments;
Inspects packages for proper sterilization (inspects indicator tapes, wet packs, unsealed containers, etc.);
* Operates various types of decontamination and sterilization equipment (i.e. washers, ultrasonic machines, cart washers, and various sterilizers);
* Arranges and assembles instrument(s) for sterilant access and aseptic presentation during sterile procedures;
* Packages single instruments, surgical trays and minor procedure trays using the appropriate packaging material or container;
* Performs daily sterilizer efficacy and verification tests and documents results; Inventories, rotates, and restocks supplies and sterilized packages and containers on a daily basis;
* Prepares individual surgical case carts with required instrumentation and surgical supplies for scheduled and emergency procedures based on procedure guides and availability of supplies;
* Utilizes infection control procedures when retrieving and transporting both sterile and contaminated reusable medical equipment and devices;
* Assists with training new employees in the SPS department; and
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Monday Through Friday, 1:00PM-4:30PM
