Duties

TOUR OF DUTY: Evening Shift (2:00 P.M. - 10:30 P.M.) Alternate Work Schedule is Optional

Work Schedule May Include Holidays and Weekends on a Regular and Recurring Basis

Rotating Shift Work May Also Be Required at Management's Discretion

*** The incumbent of this position is designated as "Emergency / Essential" and will be required to report to work during emergencies and inclement weather conditions. ***

Please Note: To be eligible for the position, the applicant must show worker level experience in at least two of the occupational areas: Electrical, HVAC and Plumbing. Position has promotion potential to the WG-10 and 11.

Introduction

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol; Office of the Chief Operating Officer; Facility Manager, Supreme Court Buildings and Grounds; Operations and Maintenance Division; Maintenance Branch. The incumbent works as a maintenance worker assisting journey-level mechanics to perform duties in plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Performs tasks to develop increasing proficiency in trade practices and skills for the proper usage of tools and equipment of various trades; the order of assembling components and the tools and equipment required; reading blueprints, sketches, and technical manuals to understand the functions and operations of components and systems to plan and lay out work and to aid in identifying faulty parts and systems; develop knowledge of repair techniques to be used; how to make adjustments and calibrations; and how to rebuild and make parts.

Major Duties

Installs Plumbing Systems under Supervision of a Higher-Grade Worker or Supervisor

Performs work for the purpose of developing skills and knowledge of the trade. Performs duties and tasks requiring more skills than the helper level up to and including, under close direction, duties and tasks performed by the journey-level. The supervisor and/or journey-level plumbers or pipefitters direct the worker and provide instructions on new assignments. As skill and knowledge increase, receives less direction until being able to do the journey-level work. Advancement to the journey-level grade, however, depends on the assignment and performance of higher level duties on a regular basis.

Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings and fixtures of water and drainage systems. Installs and repairs various fixtures and facilities such as sprinklers, water mains, sewage lines, hydrants, and water lines. Determines work sequence, materials, and tools to be used. Measures, cuts, reams, threads, bends, fits and assembles pipe and pipe fittings. Installs piping through floors, walls and ceilings of various structures. Joins pipes by use of screws, balls, fittings, or solder and caulk joints. Locates sources and determines causes of malfunctions, checks piping, fitting and fixtures for defective parts or connections. Works from building plans and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of the supply, disposal, and utility piping, systems and equipment. Installs, modifies, assembles, maintains, and repairs supply, disposal, and utility piping systems.

Air Conditioning Troubleshooting and Maintenance Work

Utilizes a few routine testing techniques to locate worn and broken parts. Makes visual, audible and mechanical checks for: the proper temperature of conditioned spaces; the proper operation of different parts of the refrigeration cycle; proper oil levels; unusual noises; overheated bearings; loose connections; faulty insulation, frayed or loose belts, gaskets and pulleys, and other similar defects. Assists with the installation and servicing of power sources for various cooling units, such as tightening connections, making splices, and insulating exposed wires. Examines system for proper operation and replaces items such as belts, fans, and fuses. Replaces major portions of various cooling units, such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies.

Electrical Maintenance, Installation, Testing, Troubleshooting, and Repair

Works from clear-cut oral or written instructions, blueprints, schematics, drawings, sketches, specifications, job orders, and wiring diagrams that indicate the nature of the repair or installation to be made; the layout and placement of circuitry, fixtures, and controls; and the types of wiring, parts, and equipment installed. Removes, replaces, tightens, splices, solders and insulates defective wiring, controls, equipment and fixtures. Locates defective parts/equipment through visual observation or through the use of test equipment. Installs or repairs equipment such as motors, generators, converters, inverters, alternators, transformers, controllers, power panels, breaker boxes, and switchboards. Assists with the installation of different types of power transforming equipment.
