Duties
NOTE: This position is a developmental position in the VA Technical Career Field Training Program and as such is managed with specific criteria associated with the position. The goal of the program is to prepare IT specialists for assignments nationally. You will be subject to the following requirements listed below:
1. As part of the VA's succession planning, the Technical Career Field (TCF) training program was created to ensure individuals are trained in critical areas that have current or predicted shortages. The program is nationally funded to include salary, benefits and training/travel dollars. At the time of acceptance into the TCF program, trainees will be asked to sign mobility, training, and service agreements. Relocation expenses for acceptance into the training program or for placement are not funded by the TCF program. Please keep in consideration, the training program is meant for those individuals who plan on staying with the VA a minimum of 3 years after completion of their training program.
2. Although not guaranteed, with more than 150 freestanding facilities and hundreds of clinic locations, we will strive to place trainees in positions that will work for him/her and the needs of the VA.
This position is with the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Information and Technology (Ol&T) and will be assigned to a pre-approved medical center, administrative office, field office, or support team. This is a centrally funded and organized developmental program specifically designed to prepare the trainee to assume the responsibilities of an Information Technology (IT) Specialist.
The trainee will perform work in computers, network components, peripheral equipment, software, firmware, data, customer support, and related resources. The work will involve the planning, installation, configuration, testing, implementation and support of the above components in support of the Department's architecture and business needs.
Work in Information Technology may be performed in any of the following specialty areas: Applications Software, Customer Support/Help Desk, Data Management, Internet, Network Services/Administration, Operating Systems, Policy and Planning, Security, System Administration and Systems Analysis.
Trainee assist in identifying problems, developing action plans to resolve problems and providing adequate support and training to end-users in all phases of computer activities. Participate in testing, installation, modification, and upgrades of systems and applications.

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-7. At the GS- 7 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-11. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
