Duties

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of WG. At the WG 1 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of WG 2. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.

These positions are located within the Environmental Management Section of Facilities Management Service at the White River Junction VA Medical Center, White River Junction, VT. As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties. Duties include cleaning wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas. Housekeeping Aids sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and tower dispensers and move furniture. Housekeeping Aids carry out assignments with a minimum of supervision.

Work Schedule: 1st, 2nd & 3rd shift available. All shifts will include holiday rotation.
Shift Hours: 8am to 4:30pm or 3pm to 11:30pm or Midnight to 8:30am

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. You will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: By law, Housekeeping Aid positions may only be filled with applicants eligible for Veterans' Preference when announced to US Citizens. Non-preference eligible applicants may be considered only if there are an insufficient number of preference eligibles to fill the vacant position(s). In order to receive proper consideration as a preference eligible, a copy of your DD-214 and/or other acceptable proof of preference eligibility must be submitted.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
