Following the completion of educational requirements, you may be considered for non-competitive conversion to a career-conditional or term appointment. In order to be converted, you must have completed educational and work requirements (640 hours prior to graduation, unless you meet one of the exceptions specified on the OPM Intern Program information page). Conversion is not mandatory or guaranteed.

If you are converted, you will be placed into a Criminal Investigator Special Agent, with career ladder potential to a GL/GS-1811-7/9/11/12/13 in the Criminal Investigation Division.

Positions are located in IRS/CI 300 North Los Angeles ST, Los Angeles, CA 90012. The anticipated start date is 9/18/17.

Duties

The following are the duties of a Pathways Student Trainee (Special Agent) at the GS-7/9/11. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

• Works with professional Special Agents and assists them in conducting field investigations.
• Searches public records, summarizing canceled checks, identifying flow of funds between depositories, assisting in research of legal questions, assisting in obtaining evidence, etc.
• Developing investigative techniques and an understanding of tax law in relation to Special Agent work, in order to meet the objectives, methods and procedures of the branch.
• Participate in special projects as part of the training experience.

Qualifications

You must meet the definition of a student for the duration of your appointment as follows: An individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate) in a qualifying and accredited educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93–842. Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are met. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of half an academic/vocational or technical course-load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this Program.

After meeting the requirements of the Pathways Internship Program you may qualify based solely on education, experience or a combination of both.

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

GS-07 LEVEL: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree from among the following or closely related fields: finance, economics, business law, tax law, or money and banking.

GS-09 LEVEL: Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree from among the following or closely related fields: finance, economics, business law, tax law, or money and banking.

You may qualify with a combination of qualifying education and experience. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.

GPA: Every semester, you must maintain good academic standing with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

- The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or VolunteerService. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.
- To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your résumé

To be converted into a Criminal Investigator Special Agent, GL/GS-1811-7/9/11/12/13, applicants must meet all GL/GS-1811 Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) Qualification Standards, including Medical and Age Requirements, prior to conversion. Please see http://ift.tt/2ro80xd

Prior to conversion, participants failing to meet the medical requirements at the time of their initial medical examination and drug test will be considered ineligible for the Special Agent position.

Existing Special Agents undergo periodic medical examinations to determine continued fitness for duty.

The date immediately preceding an individual's 37th birthday is the maximum entry age for an career conditional appointment to a position within the Department of Treasury as a law enforcement officer as defined in title 5 U.S.C. 8331(20) or in 5 U.S.C. 8401(17). Consideration will be restricted to participants who have not yet reached age 37 at the time of conversion to a Special Agent position.
