Duties
Major duties include:
Works with original archival records such as textual documents, photographs, maps and technical drawings, and historical artifacts having a very high monetary and intrinsic value and are frequently in fragile condition.
Skill and knowledge of appropriate handling methods to prevent damage or further deterioration to the records.
Reformat original archival records and photographic intermediates using digital imaging technology to produce image files and various hard copy output such as facsimile prints on paper.
Work on a range of projects, including routine digitization, special requests, and complex and difficult projects.
Create administrative and technical metadata and may, in some situations, create descriptive metadata in accordance with archival standards; assists in identifying and defining metadata requirements for specific digitization projects; and conducts quality assurance and quality control inspection of work to ensure that lab standards are being maintained.
Operate computer based digital imaging systems using a broad range of hardware and software applications for scanning, calibration, image processing, hardcopy output, and file storage/management in order to achieve a desired result. Operates digital cameras and digital copy systems.
Keep abreast of relevant developments in the digital imaging profession, as well as the hardware, software, and services provided by vendors. Assists in examining current workflows and implementing adjustments as needed to maximize efficiency and make improvements to current practices.
Provide internal digital imaging training and guidance to Textual Processing Branch and other NARA staff; represents the archival unit by participating in meetings and providing tours to lab visitors.
