Duties

As a Research Physical Scientist, specializing in climate and radiation studies, you will provide expertise to determine radiative interactions and feedbacks between atmospheric constituents in the gas phase, condensates or particles and the climate system; create or develop computationally efficient and theoretically robust means of investigating issues in radiative transfer; perform and direct highly advanced radiative transfer research, including the development of remote sensing techniques to retrieve cloud and aerosol properties; develop principles, criteria, methods, and data of general applicability to assessing Earth and planetary climate regimes as a function of atmospheric composition. Research work involves applying scientific methods, including exploring and defining problems, planning the approach for study, analyzing data, interpreting results, and documenting or reporting findings in academic journals and conferences leading to the greater understanding of radiative forcings, habitability and climate change. You will formulate basic questions, hypotheses or theories of fundamental importance to the advancement of questions of radiative transfer in the climate system. You will provide leadership in the development and improvement of radiative transfer codes in the GISS Earth System Model that allow the full range of temperature and pressure conditions relevant to a broad range of planetary conditions to be explored, including applications to paleoclimates, future climate and exoplanets. You will develop models planned for use in global simulations of atmospheric and ocean dynamics and climate change in the GISS climate program and represents GISS and NASA at international conferences, workshops, and committee meetings and to students, the media and the public at large.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is defined as conducting and overseeing research in radiative transfer and climate research; developing remote sensing techniques to retrieve cloud and aerosol properties; developing models planned for use in global simulations of atmospheric and ocean dynamics and climate change; and analyzing data leading to the greater understanding of radiative forcings, habitability and climate change.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Life Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
