The Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JAD), with the financial and technical support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is implementing the partnership for Literacy Enhancement for the deaf Project. The Project is aimed at increasing the literacy level of Deaf children in schools operated by the four major service providers of Deaf education in Jamaica and will run for three years.
Suitably qualified applicants are invited to apply for the following contractual positions. All positions require an appreciation for bilingual approach of Deaf Education, knowledge of Deaf Culture,at least a basic competency in Jamaican Sign Language and proficiency in MS Office Suite of applications.
Project Administrative Assistant
Job Summary
The Project Administrative Assistant provides HR coordination and general administration support to project staff including scheduling, data/records management,events management and tracking of staff attendance. S/he would also hold primary responsibility for the project's public relations, communications and social media activities.
Required skills, Qualifications and Experiences
The Project Administrative Assistant must have/be
- Bachelor's degree in Office Administration or any other related degree with two (2) years of administrative support experience OR a Diploma in Office Administration with over five (5) years of related practical experience.
- Certified in Jamaican Sign Language and Deaf Culture (at least up to Level 2)
- Meticulous with strong time management, organisation and administrative skills.
Training Officer
job Summary
The Training Officer is required to design, implement and coordinate training programmes targeting participating teachers, Deaf Culture Facilitators, and parents.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate the implementation of all project related training activities including the design of Jamaican Sign Language (JSl) courses and related resources
- Coordinate JSL competency assessment and certification for training courses
- Conduct annual assessment of JSL communicative competencies of students.
The Training Officer must be/have
- A trained teacher with at least a bachelor's degree in education
- 5-10 years of experience in teaching, reading, and working with the Deaf.
- Certified in Jamaican Sign Language and Deaf culture (at least up to level 2)
- Experience in leadership and project management at a strategic level
- Skill and experience with course designing and resource development
- Knowledge of JSL linguistics and a strong understanding of bilingual Deaf Education.
Reading/Literacy Specialist
Job Summary
The Reading/Literacy Specialist will be required to improved to literacy levels of students within the schools for the Deaf through collaboration with teachers and school administrators through a menu of activities, interventions and through a bilingual approach to Deaf Education.
Key Responsibilities
- Use a wide range of diagnostic tools to determine intervention needs of students
- Design and implement customised literacy interventions in collaboration with teachers to include individualised instructions, workshops, reading competition camps
- Support the development and implementation process for the JSL Curriculum
- Improve instructional staff capacity to address gaps in literacy development through teacher workshops, in class demonstrations and technical support.
The Reading/Literacy Specialist must be/have
- A trained teacher with a Bachelor's degree in education or any other related area
- At least 3 years of experience in teaching, reading, and working with the Deaf.
- certified in Jamaican Sign Language and Deaf Culture (at least up to level 2)
- Specialised knowledge of literacy strategies/programmes.
Jamaican Sign Language
Interpreter/Communication Aide
Job Summary
The primary focus of the JSL Interpreter/Communication Aide is to provide JSL and/or voice interpreting support to member of the JAD including project staff. S/he will support the JSL resource development process as well as the logistics and publicity of project events.
Required Skills, Qualifications and Experiences
- Bachelor degree in Social Sciences or any other related field
- Over two (2) years' experience in related area
- Certified in Jamaican Sign Language and Deaf Culture (at least up to Level 2)
- Active registration with the JAD Registry of interpreters.
Jamaican Sign Language (JSL) Tutor
Job Summary
The JSL Tutor must be Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing and will support the delivery of all JSL programmes for teachers, students and parents via class room instruction and home-based stimulation. S/he will participate in the data management system of performance tracking and the resource development process to promote effective bilingual Deaf Education
Required Skills, Qualifications and Experiences
- must have at least four (4) subjects at the GCE O'levels/CXC/CSEC (General)
- Classroom and JSL instruction experience are desirable
- Highly respected, demonstrate a high level of Deaf pride and possess native JSL fluency
- Effective instructional skills, professional, flexible and a considerate team-player.
Driver
Job Summary
The Project Driver is responsible for supporting the implementation of project activities through ensuring that transportation needs, driving standards, passenger safely requirements, courtesy and punctuality are achieved. Must be a High School Graduate and the owner of a General Drivers' Licence with excellent driving skills. HEART Certificate in Auto Mechanics would be an asset.
