ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION: This position is located at the Fort Thompson Indian Health Service (IHS) Health Center Behavioral Health Department located in Fort Thompson, South Dakota. The purpose of this position is to function as the domestic violence prevention specialist as a part of the Domestic Violence Prevention Initiative (DVPI) grant. The goals are to; 1) ensure access to crisis intervention and advocacy services to those experiencing domestic violence; 2) build stable and independent lives through case management and mentoring programs; and 3) break the cycle of violence through education on violence including response and resources available in the area of domestic violence.

The Behavioral Health Departmental mission is to promote behavioral health and wellness utilizing culturally relevant services in all facets of behavioral health including alcohol/drug disorders. The Behavioral Health Department provides comprehensive behavioral health and substance abuse prevention care and support to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and elderly patients in the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe Community. The content of these services range from prevention, education, and intervention including outreach services.

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. Duties

Major Duties:

• Assists in addressing individual and community based behavioral health needs.
• Provides patient care utilizing a peer support model to develop patient-centered goals and action plans.
• Responsible to implement evidence based educational curriculum in the area of domestic violence and secondary effects.
• Assists in obtaining data pursuant to DVPI grants.
• Documents client contacts in an electronic system of record(s) consistent with all applicable organizational policies and procedures.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
GS-6: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

• Group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs.
• Counselor in a youth summer camp.
• Instructor in a training program for the development of job skills.
• Work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew.
• Group activities leader in the Armed Services.
• Unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility.
• Aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), employment guidance in a vocational or academic institution, social service, or manpower development.
• Aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities.
• Aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs.

Specialized Experienced Defined: Assists in implementation of patient-centered behavioral health services through the development and implementation of culturally appropriate and community relevant education, prevention, and intervention strategies. Provide individual based assessments and coaching for clientele who have a range of needs including domestic violence issues, mental health, and substance use disorders. Able to function with a high degree of independence, including problem solving and conflict resolution.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
