Medical Items Removed from Tariff List
Drew ThiesVarious medical items, including soaps and rubber gloves, were removed from a list of potential tariffs shortly before the list was made final Tuesday evening. The list details approximately $200 billion in goods that the United States imports from China.
The Trump administration first announced the new tariff regimen in July, detailing hundreds of products that would be subject to increased tariffs in an effort to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China. AHCA/NCAL sent a joint letter along with the Health Industry Distributors Association (HIDA) to the United States Trade Representative (USTR) asking for the medical items to be removed from the initial list, noting the financial burden the tariffs would put on long term and post-acute care providers.
For items still on the finalized list, a 10 percent tariff will be applied starting September 24 of this year, increasing to 25 percent on January 1, 2019. The list contains 5,745 of the original 6,031 tariff lines that were on the proposed list.
