The Ministry of Transportation, Laboratory Services Section, requires a Materials Technician, Bituminous to conduct standard and highly specialized tests on asphalt and related highway construction materials in the Ministry's laboratories.
• be responsible for carrying out, and assist in carrying out, a variety of specialized tests in accordance with recognized standards and procedures
• prepare test specimens
• operate and maintain testing equipment
• perform testing in the laboratory and occasionally in the field
• record, document and verify test methods and results
• You have knowledge of engineering materials and their use in highway construction
• You have a basic understanding of construction technology and design methodologies
• You have experience with the operation of automated and manual testing equipment, and an understanding of the related capabilities and limitations
• You have manual dexterity and visual acuity to carry out test procedures and operate test equipment
• You have knowledge and understanding of laboratory health and safety practices and guidelines, and are able to interpret and apply WHMIS, SDS, and TDG to perform duties safely in the laboratory and field
• You are able to analyze and interpret test results
• You can problem solve to determine appropriate use of equipment and application of scientific methods
• You can record test results accurately and present test results and related information
• You are able to work as part of a team and build and maintain effective working relationships
• You are able to work with minimal supervision
• You demonstrate initiative and sound judgement
• You have fundamental knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications (i.e. Word, Excel and Outlook)

How do I qualify?
Mandatory
• Certification as an Asphalt Technician by Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL), must be obtained within 6 months of employment.Technical Knowledge and Skills
• You have experience with established testing procedures, standards and laboratory protocols (e.g. MTO, AASHTO, and ASTM) for asphalt and related bituminous materials, and a basic knowledge of the theory and principles behind them• You have knowledge of engineering materials and their use in highway construction
• You have a basic understanding of construction technology and design methodologies
• You have experience with the operation of automated and manual testing equipment, and an understanding of the related capabilities and limitations
• You have manual dexterity and visual acuity to carry out test procedures and operate test equipment
• You have knowledge and understanding of laboratory health and safety practices and guidelines, and are able to interpret and apply WHMIS, SDS, and TDG to perform duties safely in the laboratory and field

• You have well developed diagnostic and evaluation skills to assess impact of results• You are able to analyze and interpret test results
• You can problem solve to determine appropriate use of equipment and application of scientific methods

• You can communicate effectively to explain and interpret test results, to instruct and guide junior staff and to respond to queries• You can record test results accurately and present test results and related information
