The Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal (WCAT) is an independent, quasi-judicial tribunal established under Part 4 of the Workers Compensation Act (the Act).

WCAT’s mandate is to decide appeals brought by workers and employers from decisions of the Workers’ Compensation Board, operating as WorkSafeBC (the Board). WCAT decides compensation, assessment, and occupational health and safety appeals from decisions of the Review Division of the Board. WCAT also decides direct appeals from Board decisions regarding discriminatory action complaints, and compensation claim reopenings by application, as well as applications for certificates to the Court.

The purpose of this position is to provide legal secretarial and administrative support services to the Senior Vice Chair and Tribunal Counsel (SVCTC), Vice Chair Quality Assurance (VCQA) and Legal Counsels for: 
  • all legal matters in the Tribunal Counsel Office (TCO) at all levels of court (BC Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court of Canada);
  • post-decisional matters such as reconsiderations, corrections and clarifications, and complaints;
  • freedom of information requests and privacy breaches;
  • legal advice to the WCAT chair and vice chairs;
  • other TCO functions.

Qualifications:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below: 
  • A combination of 4 years’ related experience, education (completion of a recognized legal secretarial course, legal administrative assistant course, or equivalent) and/or training in providing secretarial or administrative support services attained in a legal or administrative law office environment.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience dealing with the public.
  • Experience/training in keyboarding, word processing, and other standard computer applications (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience drafting and formatting legal correspondence and documents and using voice recording equipment and transcribing tapes.
  • Must have minimum keyboarding speed of 50 wpm.
