The Toronto South Detention Centre seeks a motivated individual with experience in large-scale laundry service.

As an Assistant Storekeeper, you will supervise the inmate laundry area of the warehouse, and provide laundry service and support.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• Collect and sort soiled laundry for delivery to the laundry cleaning facility
• Receive, sort and distribute clean laundry
• Ensure proper handling of clean and soiled laundry
• Maintain records and inventory control manually and using a database
• Check, record and monitor laundry supplies and replacement articles
• Ensure the safety and security of staff, inmates, as well as tools, equipment, supplies and work area
• Load and unload carts using forklift as required
• Provide supervision, instructions and training to inmate helpers

Please note: This position supervises inmate helpers. Salary note for Custodial Responsibility Allowance (K-1) applies

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You have a valid Forklift Operator's certificate

Knowledge and Experience

• You have experience in providing large-scale laundry service in a commercial or industrial environment
• You have knowledge of laundry handling procedures and processes
• You have knowledge of warehouse shipping and receiving procedures
• You have knowledge of proper loading procedures and the use of a forklift

Analytical, Problem-Solving Skills, Inventory Tracking and Computer Skills

• You have knowledge of equipment and stock tracking and you can use inventory control database to input, update and access data
• You can check incoming laundry for correct quantity and acceptable quality
• You can track, record and report damaged articles and replacement of supplies, and maintain inventory control
• You can recognize and report security and workplace hazards promptly

Communication Skills

• You can communicate effectively to staff and inmates
• You can provide supervision, instruction and guidance to inmate helpers with tact and discretion

Other Key Knowledge

• You have interpretive knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS) and Occupational Health and Safety Act
• You can interpret and apply security practices and techniques to ensure safety and security of inmate helpers
