    What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

    This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

    Per Hour Salary:

    WG-05: $17.33 (Step 01) to $20.20 (Step 10);

    WG-06: $18.45 (Step 01) to $21.51 (Step 10);

    NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

    Responsibilities

    As a Maintenance Helper within the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
    • Operation/maintenance/troubleshoot heating system
    • Operation/maintenance/troubleshoot air conditioning
    • Operation/maintenance/troubleshoot motor control center
    • Perform plumbing work invovlved in installation and modification
    • Perform a variety of maintenance work with little or no supervision
    Physical Demands:

    Working requires heavy physical exertion to manually carry, and/or move and/or lift objects or materials weighing up to 50 pounds (unassisted); prolonged standing, walking, bending, climbing; crawling, kneeling, stooping, turning and reaching, potentially in tight areas; moving arms, hands, feet, and legs and workng in tiring or uncomfortable positions. May work from ladders and scaffolds requiring balance and climbing ability. Incumbent is under a great deal of strain by continually bending, reaching, turning, and moving of hands arms, feet, and legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. Work is performed in crowded and noisy environments; around dust, fumes, and odors.

    Working Conditions:

    The work is performed indoors and/or outdoors. Indoor work may expose the employee to work areas which can be bad-smelling, dirty, greasy, noisy or smoky. Outdoor work may expose the employee to numerous weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, rain, and/or snow. Potential serious injury may result from mishandling equipment/tools and/or from performance of strenuous work assignments. Protective clothing, eyewear, gloves, and safety shoes may be required for safe performance of duties when working with caustic cleaning agents and pesticides, machinery, and/or power equipment.
