Summary

About the Agency

The selectee for this position will serve as a Boilermaker Helper in the Mechanical Shop (Code 930), Production Resources Department (Code 900), Portsmouth, VA of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

The successful selectee will perform the following duties:

• Assisting higher graded personnel with removing, repairing, fabricating, and installation of stationary and portable tanks (steam receivers, air receivers, etc.).
• Assisting with removing, examining, fabricating and installing boiler tubes, boiler refractory materials, boiler casing, stacks, and uptakes.
• Assisting with repairing and preservation of boiler saddles and foundation; and making repairs to steam drums, water drums, headers, and attachments.
• Assisting with cleaning, preservation, idle layup, inspection, repair, cleaning and testing of components associated with steam plant cleanliness, and foreign material control requirements.

This is a training job designated for use within the parameters of the Helper to Worker Trainee Program. The purpose of this job is to provide an entrance level for candidates targeted to the Boilermaking Worker WG-3808-08 position.

Must be able to obtain an interim and/or final confidential security clearance prior to entrance on duty AND must be able to maintain the required level of clearance while employed in the subject position. Selectee will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing, working in cramped positions, and climbing.

Work requires lifting and moving heavy items.

May be required to work at various heights from ladders, scaffolding, buckets, platforms, staging, and work boxes suspended from cranes and forklifts.

Must be able to lift and/or carry weight of 45 pounds and over.

May be exposed to fumes, dust, excessive noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, and other adverse environmental conditions.

Must be able to wear personal type safety equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

May require working irregular hours.
