Joining the Secret Service, Office of the Chief Information Officer, Information Technology Operations Division will allow you to draw on your technological expertise to maintain and modernize the US Secret Service’s information technology (IT) and communications infrastructure, as well as enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of information technology systems.

This position is covered by Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime (AUO) and additional compensation may be paid at the rate of up to 25% of the base salary.

Duties

The selectee will serve as an Information Specialist (IT) in the Office of the Chief Information Officer, Information Resources Technology Operations Division. Typical work assignments include:

• Installing, operating, and maintaining Secret Service data networked equipment, components, operating systems and applications software, such as, personal computers, printers, scanners, local area networks, servers, tape back-up systems, wide area networks, routers, switches, hubs, leased circuits, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, network management systems and wide variety of other types of networking equipment.
• Analyzing and defining network requirements. Defining and maintaining network architecture and infrastructure; configuring and optimizing network servers, hubs, routers, and switches; analyzes and monitors network workload, capacity and performance and diagnoses and resolves a variety of network problems.
• Developing network backup and recovery procedures; installing, testing, maintaining, and upgrading network operating systems software; and/or ensuring the rigorous application of information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of network services.
• Collecting and interpreting network traffic patterns to ensure network availability and quality of service. Evaluating traffic load patterns and projects trends to determine whether changes are needed to ensure network availability.
• Designing, recommending, procuring and installing enhancements to the data networking and enterprise server architecture. Evaluates, procures, and maintains a wide variety of hand-held, desktop, laptop and mobile computing devices used by Secret Service employees.
• Acquiring, configuring and maintaining local area network servers for offices throughout the Secret Service. Provides server administration and management procedures and guidelines for the operation and management of the local area network servers. Researches, evaluates, and tests new server hardware and software and provides customer assistance related to LAN servers.
• Appling proper security practices, procedures, and techniques (e.g. firewalls, intrusion detection, etc.) to ensure the security posture of the network. Researches security violations in order to identify and resolve security alarms using a variety of network and security management systems.
• Resolving all activities related to the acquisition, configuration, installation, and maintenance of PCs, PDAs and other end user computing devices used by the Secret Service. Analyzes and troubleshoots all complex technical problems and provides customer assistance on a variety of end user computing related questions. Researches and tests new end user computing devices and software. Provides a wide variety of problem resolution assistance to the user community (e.g. Personal computer hardware/software, mainframe applications, electronic messaging, information security and telecommunications).

Qualifications

Experience must be IT related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate.

GS-05 through GS-15 (or equivalent): for all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. The employing agency is responsible for identifying the specific level of proficiency required for each competency at each grade level based on the requirements of the position being filled.

1. Attention to Detail – Maintains, configures, optimizes, and troubleshoots computer systems and network technologies (i.e. servers, databases, operating systems, network services and equipment) responsibly to meet customer performance requirements.
2. Customer Service – Provides guidance, direction, and technical support to the user community by analyzing and troubleshooting complex problems impacting hardware attached to the network or communications devices.
3. Oral Communication – Communicates technical information regarding systems performance requirements or technologies needed to meet future information technology needs in clear and concise manner to management and the user community.
4. Problem Solving –Identifies problems related to managing various aspects of systems administration (i.e. Active Directory, Communications, Virtualization, Storage) and developing solutions or recommendations to modify, configure, or integrate technologies to meet customer performance requirements.

GS-07: You qualify for the GS-7 level (starting salary $44,941) if you are team oriented, capable of learning new technologies rapidly and possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level performing duties such as assisting with gathering requirements from the agency’s end users and defining solutions. Assist in diagnostic routines on networked equipment using state-of-the-art data analyzers, software, or other test equipment to troubleshoot network failures.

GS -09: You qualify for the GS-9 level (starting salary $54,972) if you are team oriented, capable of learning new technologies rapidly and possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level performing duties such as: assist in the gathering requirements from the agency’s end users and defining solutions. Assist in applying proper security practices, procedures, and techniques for firewalls, intrusion detection to ensure the security posture of the network.





Education:

GS-7: 1 full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement

GS-9: Master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree

OR

Education: All academic degrees and coursework must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions

Undergraduate or Graduate Education: Degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
